How AutoCue works — in plain language.

The big idea

AutoCue listens to you through the microphone. As you speak out loud, it finds each word in your script and scrolls to keep up. You never press anything to make it move — it follows your voice.

Your pace doesn't matter

It tracks the words you actually say, not a stopwatch. Speak slowly and it waits; speak fast and it keeps up; pause for a breath and it holds until you're back on script. There's nothing to set for speed.

Language is the one thing to get right

The Language setting tells AutoCue which language to listen for. Pick the one the speaker will use — set it wrong and it won't recognise the words. A different speaker in a different language just picks the matching one before starting.

Writing your script — 3 handy marks

• *words* — makes those words bigger and bold for emphasis.
• [stage direction] — a note to yourself, shown in red italics. The app won't try to match it against your voice.
• <Presenter Name> — shows a yellow name label, handy when two people share one script.

The setup options

• Text size — bigger is easier to read from far away.
• Theme — Dark, Light, or Amber colours.
• Column width — how wide the text block sits.
• Font — pick the typeface that reads easiest for you.
• Spoken word colour — how already-said words look: normal, dimmed, green, or hidden.
• Scroll sensitivity — Loose follows you eagerly; Strict waits for a surer match before moving. Turn it up if it jumps ahead too easily, down if it's slow to follow.
• Saved Scripts — save a script to reload it later.
• Session History — a log of your last 20 runs (how long, how fast, how far you got).
• Media Background — images or video behind the words, with a dimness slider to keep them readable.
• Production Cues — set a trigger word and a coloured reminder pops up when you say it.

Starting up

When you press start you get a short 3-2-1 countdown, so you can get set before it begins listening.

The controls while running

The bar at the bottom fades while you talk — move the mouse to bring it back:

• Pause / Resume — or the spacebar.
• Back — jump back 15 words (or the left arrow).
• A− / A+ — text size on the fly.
• Mirror (⟺) — flips the text for a teleprompter glass rig.
• Speed — a plain timer-scroll if you'd rather it move on its own.
• 📱 — phone remote (scan the QR code with your phone).
• ✏ Edit — change the script live, mid-session, without losing your place.
• 📝 Notes — private reminders only you see.
• ⊞ Operator — a control window for a helper on the same computer.
• ⊡ Monitor — a clean, big-text “confidence” screen for a second display or a presenter's monitor.
• ■ Stop — ends the session and returns to setup.

Online vs offline

Seeing and hand-scrolling the script works with no internet. But the voice-following needs internet — your voice is sent off to be understood online and the words come back. No connection means it can't follow you. The Speed button gives a plain timer-scroll that works offline as a backup.

Good to know

Use Chrome on a computer for the voice feature. The site runs on a secure (https) link through Netlify — the microphone and phone remote only work on a secure address, which is why it's hosted that way.
